Rescue 911 – Episode 520 – “Butane Huffing”

A teenage boy collapses after huffing butane. This segment was taken from Episode 520 which aired on March 22, 1994 on CBS. Vote for Rescue 911 to be released on DVD at www.tvshowsondvd.com and to be put back on television at www.petitiononline.com
Yes, it was syndicated. It was paired with “Pickup Truck Heroes”.
A heartbreak really. This goes to show why there needs to be more education about the dangers of huffing butane, and indeed other petroleum based products. By doing this, this caused the premature end of a life that just barely begun to make its mark on the world. God Bless those left behind.
I’ve seen this episode many times, and it still makes me so sad. I wonder how the family is, I know they never fully recovered, but I still wonder. Momento Mori-Remember Death.
A tragic yet valuable lesson, when you use drugs, consider who you are hurting.
i smoke weed and i like cookies :]
why do all the kids do this? crazy, buy a joint if you need to get high. at least it’s natural and not going to kill you.
Was this segment ever syndicated? Not sure if I asked that already.
I think this is probably the first episode that I watched of Rescue 911 where someone actually died

No, the show got cancelled in 1996, and re-runs haven’t been shown in the USA since 2005. I think Zone Reality in the UK is currently showing re-runs.
I was also 15 when I first used butane out of a disposable lighter. I told my best friend how cool the effects were, we bought a can of it, and were walking around huffing. Probably 30 minutes later, we ended up getting jumped and robbed, but we kept huffing anyway.
I remember I got to a point where I was staring at a wall, and it felt like everything stopped. The only thing in existance was the feeling, and it was increasing rapidly… When I came down, I vowed to never do that again.
Wow, just wow. Anything that can be said about drug use is right here. This though, is an extreme case of drug use. The chemicals in butane are much, much more toxic than let’s say marijuana. Yes, drugs are bad, but not the kind that aren’t from a can. Heroine and cocaine, meth etc….horrible…can, will, and has taken lives, but when one labels the use of marijuana as “life ruining”, they are completely false. No one has ever died from smoking marijuana, ever.
The one you’re probably thinking of is “Cealent Overdose” from episode 409. In that segment, I think there were 3 teens (two girls and a guy.) They left school during their lunch break, went to the store, got some butane and scotchguard, and inhaled it all the way back to the school. The guy inhaled more than what one of the girls did. He didn’t die, but he did have permenant brain damage as a result. and yes, that story was on “Rescue 911.”
A lot of people in the medical field watched Rescue 911. You’re not in the minority.
wait wait….his friend said “if brad didnt die, id probably still be huffing butane”…..so the whole, you know, crisis wasnt enough of a lesson? what a douchebag.
Oh, SPOILER ALERT: the turd dies.
Realli? Any Examples?
How do you huff a gas? Wouldn’t it escape and diffuse around the atmosphere if it was just in a paper bag?
Is this like spray paint huffing? (I don’t know anything about it either, but I don’t necessarily need to because I will NEVER do this because this episode scared the HELL out of me!)
Good for you! Thank you for talking to them, we don’t need another tragedy like this!
which ones?
Loosing your best friend and having to live with the guilt of knowing you helped cause it, is something no one should have to go through. Sometimes wanting to impress the popular crowd isn’t worth the price you have to pay
Why did the mom call 911 as opposed to the sister?
Why did he have his mom call 911 as opposed to the girl
is this show still on tv?
There are some states that have decriminalized it to some degree. In Massachusetts, for example, if you are in possession of less than a certain amount (half an ounce, I think), the maximum penalty is a $100 fine. Also, in Alaska, there is no penalty for possessing a certain small amount in the privacy of your home.
I won’t say that marijuana is good for you, but from what i’ve read, it’s no worse than cigarettes or alcohol, which are both legal.
No he wasn’t. There were other deaths on Rescue 911.
