Could someone please explain the appeal and effects of inhaling Air Duster (canned air)?

My friends and I were being stupid one night and one whipped out a can of air duster. They huffed the entire thing in about half an hour and were freaking like crazy over it.

They offered me some but I refused because the idea inhaling compressed air (and however many unknown/ harmful chemicals) really scares me. Won’t ever try it.

Could someone let me know what the appeal of an “air duster high” is, and the long and short time health effects that come with using it?

If anyone has a link to a website with this information it would be greatly appreciated :)

And for the record, I haven’t tried it and have no plans to.

Please don’t do it again. The chemicals will make you feel somewhat “high” for a little bit but hundreds of people die every year doing this… A girl in my neighborhood, a young teenager, just died 2 weeks ago from doing this.. I am trying to find the link about her story for you. Please don’t do this. This is more harmful than smoking marijuana , I mean this is really bad for you and can cause instant death.
Here is some info and different stories of people who have died from huffing: http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/dustoff.asp

everything like vibrates in ur vision and ur voice seems really deep n u get a high feeling it kills ur brain cells like crazy u’ll be brain dead and it could kill u with ur first huff

Don’t try it you can have a sudden cardiac arrest from doing it. They do it for a high but it’s dangerous.

Compressed air is compressed air, there’s nothing really wrong with that part. The compressed air is not what gets people high, it’s the aerosol in the cans.

It’s appealing cause it’s a fast and cheap high, and is relatively easy to get a can of something that has aerosol in it.

Obviously this has serious health effects and can be fatal, wikipedia has a more in depth article on it:

That is VERY dangerous. You need to stop them, that can kill you the first time doing that. It removes oxygen from the brain and causes major injury.

It’s a drug addiction, and you can get hooked on it very quickly.
Stop them before it gets worse.. =//

Well, I don’t know about the effects of huffing it, or even what is in it, but I use it to freeze bugs and spiders to death before disposing of them. Is that something you want in your lungs?

I’ve seen people do it, but I’d never even consider it.

“Death” as a side-effect with no known overdose threshold scares me enough.

An addict to a [stereotypical] drug of abuse would typically have to keep doing more and more to eventually die from it, whereas with duster, you could die instantly, or maybe your lungs would freeze from the propellant contained in the can.

“Since gas dusters are one of the many inhalants that can be easily abused, many manufacturers have added a bittering agent to deter people from inhaling the product. Because of the generic name “canned air”, some people mistakenly believe that the can only contains normal air or contains a less harmful substance known as nitrous oxide. However, the gases actually used are denser than air, and inhaling can lead to paralysis, serious injury, or death. Recently, in the United States and Canada stores have begun to ask for ID to verify if the customer is 18 years or older (some include Fred Meyer, Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, RadioShack, Walgreens, Canadian Tire, Shopko, Target, and Wal-Mart).

Use of dusters can produce large clouds of dust, which may directly affect the lungs.”

Perhaps your friends got lucky and only got brain and lung damage from it, but they may not be so lucky the next time.

I recall reading a story about a police officer who lost his son before his birthday due to a large can of duster; they found him dead with the straw from the can sticking out of his mouth.

That’s all the reason I need to never do duster.
